A Different Kind of Loneliness

Have you ever felt lonely? Most of us at some point in our lives will experience at least one form of loneliness. While for some people it may be lack of family or friends, for others it could be an overabundance of superficial relationships without any deep connections.

There is also a type of loneliness that is fairly unique to this entrepreneurial path – we will discuss that another time.

For today, however, I want to touch on a different version of this phenomenon. You see, when many of us feel lonely the natural course of action would be to go out and socialize with others, right? We might try to make new friends, catch up with old buddies, or rekindle fading ties.

But from all of that, there may still be an emptiness inside. That’s because you may not be addressing that actual loneliness that you’re experiencing.

While social connections are wonderful and very important for our psychological health, they are not always what we need. And if we fall back on others to fill certain voids within ourselves, we may become dependent on them to validate us.

What we often need to do is first look inwards. Sometimes loneliness can actually be a sign of a dwindling relationship with our own selves. If we can dedicate the time and introspection to identifying what it really is that we’re lacking, we can prevent ourselves from tying our happiness and self-worth to external affirmation.

There is a loneliness that no one else can fill.

Address that first.
