Bite is a company on a mission – a mission to reduce plastic waste and make a more environmentally-friendly line of hygiene and personal care necessities.
The majority of mainstream products come in single-use or difficult-to-recycle packaging – think toothpaste tubes, deodorant sticks, floss boxes, even the toothbrushes themselves. Bite is here to change all that by rethinking not only how the products are packaged, but also how they are made to begin with.
Enter… toothpaste bits! Bite’s signature product, toothpaste bits are little tablet-like chunks of compressed-powder toothpaste. Simply pop one in your mouth, chew a few times, and all of a sudden the bit has turned into toothpaste! Then just brush as you normally would. Bits are a necessary development in toothpaste production in order to be able to ditch the nonrecyclable toothpaste tube and find an alternative means of packaging. These chewable bits come in a glass jar for the first purchase, and then refills are sent in home-compostable pouches after that. Refill the jar indefinitely and compost the pouches – no waste!
Other products include a bamboo toothbrush with vegan, compostable bristles. Most traditional bristles are made with petroleum products or the natural bristles use boar hair, but Bite’s toothbrush is equipped with bristles made from 100% castor bean oil, so they are not only biodegradable but also cruelty-free.
Their floss is vegan, made from 100% corn PLA, and is packaged in glass jars. While PLA, or polylactic acid, often gets a bad reputation as being a greenwashing scam, it is the best option when it comes to something that truly needs to be single-use, like dental floss. When made from plant-based sources and not mixed with petroleum products, PLA is compostable. Read more here.
Whitening gel and mouthwash bits are two other oral-hygiene related products available from Bite. They have expanded into producing deodorant and body balm as well, both of which come in refillable metal containers with available refills.
Bite has also made sincere efforts to reduce the footprint of shipping their products directly to customers. All of their boxes and mailers are paper products and fully recyclable, including the tape. Their shipping takes advantage of existing postal routes, beating out traditional stores and rush delivery services in terms of emissions produces.
When it comes to personal hygiene there are certain necessities that we cannot do without. In order to reduce our environmental footprints and move toward making more sustainable purchasing decisions we are going to need to shift our product loyalty to those items which do the least harm while still getting the job done effectively. Bite has given us the opportunity to do just that.
