Starting out can be one of the most exciting – and most intimidating – phases of your entrepreneurial journey. As you struggle through this initial phase you may begin to feel discouraged by the time it takes to learn your craft, spread your message, find your audience, and reach the point where you feel comfortable with this business decision that you’ve made.
Looking around you see all of these giants – chain stores, famous gurus, successful experts, and the like. Some of them may very well be your competition. But how will you ever get there?
Let’s start by changing the question a bit – how did they ever get there?
It is crucial to remind ourselves that we all start somewhere. Even the biggest organizations in the world used to be nothing – completely nonexistent. And then one day they were a conversation over dinner or some notes scribbled on a napkin. That idea led to hyping up some friends and getting them on board, forming a company, and all the rest that followed.
Of course it’s discouraging to think that you’re competing against all of these established companies, or athletes, or whatever your field may be, but always remember that they were once beginners too.
So the lesson here – try not to look at these giants as daunting competitors, but rather as examples of what is possible.
Because if they started small and made it big, then that means it can be done.
And maybe, just maybe, we can do it too.
